NExT Exam – Common National Exit Test for indian Medical Students And

The National Exit Test (NExT) is a landmark reform in Indian medical education, introduced by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It will serve as a single, unified examination for

unified exam proposed by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It is designed to act as a single common test for all medical graduates. This includes both students studying inside India and Indian students pursuing an MBBS degree abroad.

  • Students graduating from Indian medical colleges (both government and private)
  • Indian students completing MBBS from foreign universities

🌟 Purpose of the Exam
The NExT exam aims to create a uniform level of quality for medical professionals across the country. It serves three major goals:
  • Licensing: It acts as a mandatory test to get a license to practice medicine in India.
  • PG Admissions: It replaces the NEET-PG exam to allocate post-graduation seats based on merit.
  • FMG Screening: It replaces the existing Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE).

πŸ“ Structure of NExT

The exam is structured into two main steps to test both book knowledge and practical skills:

Exam Stage

Exam Type Format & Core Content Timing
NExT Step 1 Theory Online Computer-Based Test (CBT) with Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) covering major clinical subjects. Taken before starting a mandatory internship.
NExT Step 2 Practical Face-to-face clinical case studies, oral questions (viva), and practical evaluation. Taken after completing the internship.

🌍 Impact on Abroad Medical Students

Currently, Indian students who complete their MBBS from foreign universities must pass the FMGE exam to practice in India. Students graduating from Indian colleges do not have to give this screening test.
Once NExT is fully put into action, everyone will sit for the exact same test. This levels the playing field so that both home and abroad medical graduates face the same testing standard to secure a practice license.

⏳ Current Status

The NExT exam has not been fully implemented yet. The NMC has introduced the basic legal rules, but the final rollout has been delayed to carefully refine the format and setup the necessary testing infrastructure.

Until NExT officially rolls out, the older system remains active:

  • FMGE continues to be the operational exam for foreign medical graduates.
  • NEET-PG remains the valid gateway for post-graduate admissions.
